Director¡¯s Statement

Life science has undergone revolutionary advances during last 30 years, first with the development of recombinant DNA technologies in 1970, deciphering molecular details of all events in cells, transformation of animals and plants with the useful genes, animal cloning, and finally the sequencing of human genome and others. All these advances forces us to build capacity for multidisciplinary and integrative approaches for the translation of the scientific information into biotechnologies. In fact, basic science and biotechnology are intimately intertwined, and it is difficult to draw a line between the two disciplines. Recognizing biotechnology is the next engine of growth in science and economy, every universities have launched their biotechnology initiatives to benefit from the exciting development in life sciences.

We at Postech also felt obligated to contribute to the society by translating our discoveries into biotechnology. Thanks to the financial support provided by POSCO for innovative research, a new building and facilities PBC is well positioned to become a world class biotechnology center. The advisory board, composed of internationally renowned scientists, recently visited us and praised the rapid progress we have made in a short period of time as well as the cutting edge science being carried out by our top notch scientists. They were also impressed by our well established facilities.

We are keenly aware of our obligation for our society to become a model success case, and the leadership role we have to play in successful cooperation between industry and academia. We will do our best to achieve these goals with the support from all the friends in the world.

Thank you.
